Christmas markets around New Year's Eve?

Question:

On 24 October, 2012 Karen asked:

Hi Stuart,

How nice of you to offer your assistance.
I am Karen writing from the little island of Malta. Me and my
husband were talking of coming to Germany for the Christmas market
together with our 5 year old princess.  Were thinking of coming from
the 27th december till 4th January.
My questions are :-
1)  will it still be  at it's best during that period?
2)  Can you please suggest somewhere safe for a 5 year old to spend
New Year's Eve?

Many thanks from the hot sunny Island of Malta :)

Answer:

Hello Karen,

Thank you for your email!

Unfortunately most of the Christmas markets will be closed by then! They usually close on the 23rd of December or around midday on the 24th of December.
For more details on the opening times see the page on Destination Munich here munich-christmas-marketsl . or the official Munich website here www.muenchen.de

The only exception I can think of is the Winter Tollwood festival, which isn't a "true" Christmas market but it has a lot of similar food/drink and gift stands. It takes place at the Theriesienwiese (Oktoberfest field) and finishes on December 31.
So you will be a little late for the markets!
As for your other question, to be honest, I'm not really sure where a five-year-old could spend New Year's Eve. Have you already got your accommodation booked?  I guess you could ask your hotel if they can organise a babysitter?

Good luck anyway, and have a fabulous time in Munich. I can't think of a better place to enjoy a bit of wintry goodness and ring in the New Year.
Thanks a lot,
Stuart
